Super Intelligence (SI) and AI: what businesses should know

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Super Intelligence (SI) are appearing together in business conversations. Before choosing a service, it helps to understand how those terms are being used and what the proposed system will actually do.

Why are people using the term Super Intelligence?

On 29 September 2026, a US executive order directed executive-branch agencies to use Super Intelligence and SI in place of Artificial Intelligence and AI in specified official communications and documents. For that order, SI uses the existing statutory AI definition. This is a terminology policy for the executive branch, rather than a universal renaming of business technology.1

The word “superintelligence” also has a broader technical use. Research discussions use it for systems with intelligence substantially beyond human capability.2 That meaning should not be confused with the wording policy or assumed from an agency's service label.

Does the new name change what a business system can do?

A name alone does not describe a system's capabilities. A useful proposal should explain the tasks, information, integrations and limits of the actual implementation.

When considering an AI assistant or automation project, ask what it will do in your workflow, which tools it needs to access, how outputs will be checked and when a person takes over. A demonstration using an agreed example is more informative than a broad promise about intelligence.

What should “Super Intelligence services” mean in a proposal?

Ask the provider to define the service. If “super intelligence services” or “SI consulting” describes an AI implementation, the proposal should state that plainly and identify the deliverables. If it claims capabilities beyond that, ask what evidence supports the claim.

The distinction matters for expectations, review and measurement. Describe the outcome you need, then assess whether the proposed system can reliably support that task.

Start with a practical business problem

An incoming enquiry, a repeated handoff or an information task can provide a useful starting point. Define the task, understand the current process and agree how the proposed improvement will be tested.

You can then judge an Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Super Intelligence (SI) proposal by its scope and demonstrated performance, whichever terminology is used.
